An Exploration of Sand Dunes and Overlapping
This project was an exploration of biomimicry, a process of examining nature and its elements to gain a better understanding of how we as humans interact with nature. We established a basic rule that consisted of repeated and alternated overlaps to explore the natural overlapping patterns of sand caused by the velocity of wind speeds. With our rule established, we further analyzed our overlapping technique and stumbled across the design duet, Ball-Nogues, whose spatial installations permeating with light inspired us to incorporate luminosity with our overlapping technique. Acrylic happened to be to perfect material for such an endeavor because it provided both the structural support and transparent luminosity we wanted for our space but the technique of folding paper and molding acrylic were much different explorations. An urban context was decided upon because we felt it best coincided with our overall concept of biomimicry and inspiring people through nature where nature is less readily seen. This project challenged us all to think beyond surface aesthetic and analyze how spaces can be shaped wonderfully just by a simple rule.
